This designation means Coach Paul is authorized to administer the IPTPA Rating System (most current version of testing system – ver 3.0) for players up to the 4.5 skill level. Paul is also a Certified Pickleball Teaching Professional and 4.5 skill-rated player through IPTPA, the International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association.
The IPTPA Skill Level Rating System is used worldwide by IPTPA Certified Teaching Professionals and Rating Specialists to objectively test and develop the skills and performance of players. An IPTPA skill-level rating is a straightforward, reliable, and bias free measure of skill that is different from other ranking systems.
Coach Paul utilizes the IPTPA Rating System as a performance-based measure of skill improvement. He incorporates this objective rating protocol into his training plans for players aiming to get rated at the 2.5 – 4.5 levels. As with any performance-based test, you won’t be surprised by the expectations needed to move up in level. And, your IPTPA rating is yours and yours alone. It’s not dependent on the performance of gameplay partners or questionable bracket decisions made in tournament or ladder competitions.
One of the biggest issues in pickleball is self-assessing your rating. Actually, it’s OVER self-assessing your own rating to be exact. You’ve probably heard, “I’m a 3.5 or you’re NOT 3.5!”, around your local pickleball courts. Most clubs divide play between levels of play to encourage participants to play with players of a similar level. Determination of this level can be controversial and subjective as players often believe that they are at a higher level than their skills dictate. The truth is, basic online self-assessment rating system does follows some guidelines, but overall it’s a bit subjective. Bottom line, most self-assessed players are not being true and realistic when it comes to their own rating. Self-assess and rate yourself correctly and play at the proper level.
