|Why Coach Paul Developed BOUNCEBALL
BOUNCEBALL was developed with one simple intention: to help players improve their footwork and build confidence around the non-volley zone.
In traditional pickleball, players can often rely on quick hands, reach, and reaction volleys. While those abilities are very valuable, they can sometimes hide problems with movement, spacing, balance, and court positioning. BOUNCEBALL removes that shortcut by requiring every ball to bounce before it is played.
This one simple rule changes how players approach every shot.
Once players allow the ball to bounce, they must read its speed, depth, direction, and spin. They have to move their feet, create enough space, establish balance, and choose the right response. Reaching and reacting at the last second become less effective, while early movement and controlled preparation are rewarded.
Around the non-volley zone, this is especially valuable. Many players feel rushed or uncomfortable when the ball drops near their feet or moves them away from their preferred position. BOUNCEBALL gives them repeated opportunities to practise these situations in a fun and competitive environment. Over time, players become more comfortable moving around the kitchen line, handling difficult bounces, maintaining their balance, and recovering for the next shot.
The game also helps players develop greater confidence in their decision-making. Because the ball must bounce, they have a little more time to see what is happening and understand their options. They learn where to dink (placement and the type of dink), when to reset, when to change direction, and when patience is the smarter choice.
BOUNCEBALL naturally develops:
- Better footwork and court positioning
- Greater confidence around the non-volley-zone
- Improved balance and spacing
- Stronger anticipation and ball recognition
- Better control, touch, and consistency
- Smarter type shot selection
- More effective recovery after every shot
- A better understanding of pace, angles, and spin
- Greater patience during longer rallies
Although BOUNCEBALL has its own rules, the skills it develops transfer directly to regular pickleball. Players become better prepared to handle balls at their feet, defend difficult shots, control the pace of a rally, move efficiently around the court, and remain composed under pressure.
Coach Paul did not develop BOUNCEBALL to replace pickleball. He developed it to build better pickleball players—players who move with purpose, play with balance, and feel confident around the non-volley zone.
The idea behind the game remains clear and simple:
READ THE BOUNCE.
MOVE YOUR FEET.
CHOOSE YOUR SHOT.
